Green Elfcup

Chlorociboria aeruginascens

Description:

Greenish blue cup fungi with off-centered stems. 4-5mm wide. This species contains a quinone pigment called xylindein, which is the reason for the characteristic bluish-green stain that occurs on wood that's infected by this species.

Habitat:

Growing on rotting wood in a deciduous forest.

Notes:

I have seen so much Green Elfcup this autumn! It seems to be everywhere I go. I'm not sure the reason for the abundance, but it's beauty certainly is welcome!
