Green Skin-head

Cortinarius austrovenetus

Description:

Beautiful green -capped fungi about 50 mm wide (mature caps). The emerging fruiting bodies had rounded green caps with a pale cream cortina running from the cap margin to the stipe (pic 3). Pics 1 & 2 show a clump of young mushrooms with cracked green skins and dark blue-green centres. The flesh and gills were a rich cream as was the stipe. In mature mushrooms, remnants of the cortina could be seen as wispy structures on the stipe with stains from tan spores ( pic 5).

Habitat:

Forest floor - eucalytpus forest. Near Cardinia Reservoir

Notes:

Like many other mushrooms in the area, the caps appeared cracked from lack of moisture. Also labelled as Dermocybe austroveneta
