Description:

Turtle with a dark, shiny carapace, and yellow plastron. Yellow markings on the head and legs. The shell was about a foot long.

forest underbrush.

Ah! a YELLOW bellied slider. That makes more sense.

Definitely a yellow-bellied slider, the distinguishing feature is that yellow cresent shape behind the eye.
