Pluvialis squatarola
Also known as the Grey Plover. During non-breeding season is not as dramatic as the darker colors of the breeding season. After they moult in their winter colors show as white chest, belly and rump. Light brown-grey color on head, back and wings. The wings have a pattern that resembles spotting. A white band between eyes and bill. Short legs and bill.
Winters on coastal beaches and estuaries
Spotted along California coast beaches mostly during low tide.
I agree with Black-bellied. Apart from plainer flanks, Golden-plovers will appear slimmer with a thinner bill, longer legs, and longer primary projection.
Thanks for pointing that out - although molting / over exposure could effect that slightly. Black-bellied Plover is your other best fit. Again, the distinguishing mark would be under the wings with having or lacking a black spot.
Probable Pacific Golden Plover - Possible Black-bellied Plover (distinction is difficult without seeing under its auxiliary regions).
