Green Citrus Locust

Melicodes tenebrosa

Description:

Handsome green short-horned grasshopper, about 8cm body length (antennae not included), the biggest I've seen so far and a very cooperative photo subject :). First ID was Valanga sp., subfamily Cyrtacanthacridinae (Bird Grasshoppers), family Acrididae. Melicodes tenebrosa Walker, 1870 is sometimes placed under subfamily Catantopinae, the Spur-throated Grasshoppers.

Habitat:

Backyard at Biñan, Laguna, spotted on leaves of a young Longan tree (Dimocarpus longan).
