Purple Finch

Haemorhous purpureus

Description:

These are either House or Purple Finch; I'm not positive which. The male's coloring seemed more wine-colored than a House Finch should be. I know its a male and female Finch. We have these and other finches in our yard year round.

Habitat:

At feeders in our front and back yard. All feeders are near a (frozen) lake, off a quiet one-lane road and within a seven mile radius of wetlands, woodlands, farmlands and prairie fields

Notes:

Typically comes to niger thistle in hanging feeders but also comes to platform feeders for both black-oil sunflower seed and safflower. Also seen feeding on the ground under a bird feeder. Most frequently seen with or near: American Goldfinch, Pine Siskins, Common Redpolls and Northern Cardinals.

JamesFunk, 8BitFinch and Liam-Thank you all so much! That was what my gut said but I wasn't positive. It sounds like we're all in agreement so, I'll go with that unless someone says otherwise. Thanks again!!!

The female looks like an immature female Purple Finch...I used Cornell Lab of Ornithology All About Birds (online)...there is a picture of a male and immature female together. Take a look and let me know what you think
