Snakefly

Phaeostigma notata

Description:

A snakefly, sitting on a dandelion. This insect taxonomy is over 100 million, maybe even 200 million years old, from the Cretaceous and Jurassic period. They prey on small insects and mites. This one is a female, note the egglaying stinger behind its abdomen. With around 205 species worldwide it's considered rare, they lack in the most tropical areas of the world. Only 3 species in Norway.

Habitat:

Mixed forest, urban garden

Notes:

This spotting was awsome, the second time I have ever seen one of these and last time was just one year ago :D

Thanks Viv, just luck as I only went out to water my plants. Moved to a different area and this island is a goldmine of rare species :) It house over 300 national redlist species, maybe even more :)
