rhinoceros beetle

Oryctes rhinoceros

Description:

Large brown beetle with horn structures on head. Brown and black in color (shiny) and covered with some hair. This beetle measured approximately 3/4 to 1 inch in length.

Habitat:

Not sure of its typical habitat as I am not sure exactly which species this is. I am classifying it as Oryctes rhinoceros but would like help with definitive identification. This guy was found crawling in the mulch on our playground. We live in a hot and dry area of Texas.

Notes:

We often find these beetles at this time of year.
