Bolete type mushroom with spongeform gill structure. Cap is striated in a pateern reminiscent of honeycomb in a pale beige with white edges - the gill structure was turning brownish.
This was taken on the same trip as the clearwing moth. Second best capture of the trip

Definitely a closer match. I'd previously submitted it to a couple mushroom ID sites and it was suggested that the surface has simply been slug eaten, but having seen it first hand I knew that wasn't the case. Thank you
Not really B.ananas, more like Boletus Hortonii...
See http://www.mushroomexpert.com/boletus_ho... and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boletus_ho...
wondering if it is possible this is the pineapple bolete? Boletellus ananas
I was absolutely stunned. It was perfect, aside from the bite mark in the stem - which shows the staining from being bruised/eaten. The cap is just magical - like whipped and browned meringue!
Absolutely marvelous! I've never seen anything like it, in books or otherwise.
I hope not! I tried once and got nothing that seemed likely. I sent it off to another mushroom site *fingers crossed*
Mirror would be great, except when I'm traveling as I travel very light
What a great-looking cap ! Karen, you might know this but try a mirror for the under side. I know some don't believe in it but I've got a good/clear enough shot every time if you angle the mirror correctly. But, given the wonderful upper surface an ID should not be too difficult ??
that's did not
Did get an good id. They seemed to think it had been eaten by something, but I'm pretty sure I'd know that scarred edge look and this didn't have it. Am going to try again for an id elsewhere
Thank you, very much. I just submitted
It's really cool, but I don't have a clue. The people over on Mushroom Observer will be able to help you for sure - upload it there, it's definitely worth it.

Hey, thank you! It's been bugging me too. I wish I could have gotten a decent photo underneath, but without breaking the stem, I couldn't. But I did get a look and it was definitely a boletus type.
Our guide was really disgusted with us as we weren't birders, we were naturalists. The whole 5 of us were ooing and ahing over this and he just tromped off
Well, this mushroom is bugging me for a while now, but I can't find anything on it on the web.
Maybe one of these guys can help: http://www.tropicalfungi.org/?page_id=78...
I already wrote and sent this link to Mr. Henkel, but with no response yet.
am hoping someone can come up with a better ID than just boletus mushroom!
