Syma torotoro
A smaller sized kingfisher 18-20cm. Underparts pale to white, upper breast and head a distinctive orange/yellow with a black spot on the back of the head. Female (shown here) also has a black patch over the crown. Mantle is a dark turquoise/blue-green. Bill a clear bright yellow with no black.
Found in lowland and hill forest. This female seen on forest edge in Varirata National Park, east of Port Moresby in PNG.
The sub species Syma t. torotoro is endemic to New Guinea.
