Endoxyla sp
A beautiful specked grey moth about 35mm long. Thorax had a distinct inverted "V" in black. Legs were heavily "furry" and antennae, feathery nearer the base. Hind wings were a pearly brown. Abdomen was quite thick. Antennae were feathery - male.
This moth was spotted fluttering under the very bright lights of a used car yard along a highway. The car yard is located opposite a national park with native trees - eucalyptus & wattle mostly.
I believe this moth is from Family Cossidae and genus Endoxyla. The endoxyla genus has about 58 species. The larvae bore deep into eucalyptus tree trunks, and are one of many species of the Witjuti grub. These grubs are a known food to both man and some native birds. I would greatly appreciate confirmation of this ID. Thanks I will add appropriate references when I find the information.
