Lophodytes cucullatus
The Hooded Merganser is a small duck and is the only member of the genus Lophodytes. Hooded Mergansers have a crest at the back of the head which can be expanded or contracted.
Here you see them as they swim in Mahoning Creek, Loop, PA, USA. Photo #1 is female, male, female. Photo #2 is male, female, female. The last four photos, which are much clearer images were actually a surprise seen on top of our above ground pool, with rain water on top of our winter cover. This Hooded Merganser decided to drop by for a swim!
