Lesser Scaup

Aythya affinis

Description:

Medium sized duck. Males have black and white bodies with a greenish or purple gloss on the head. Females are varying shads of brown and tan with a white patch on the face by the bill. Both sexes have grayish bills. Prefers fresh water and smaller ponds. Easily confused with the Greater Scaup (Aythya marila) which looks very similar and is found within the same range.

Habitat:

Man-made freshwater lagoon in a golf course area.

Notes:

Small flock observed in a lagoon with several othe species of birds including egrets, herons, anhingas and cormorants.
