Great Blue Heron

Ardea herodias

Description:

Hunkered down from the wind on this cold January day, this heron does not show the stately posture normal to this bird! Long legs, long neck are both well hidden.

Habitat:

Marshes, ponds, rivers, coast wherever food can be found. Frogs, bugs, fish, etc are all good food.

Notes:

I have dozens of photos of these common birds but I never get tired of watching them hunt. There is a heronry close to this location, which makes spotting herons here a given. Once we saw dozens of them ready to spend the night in a grassy field across the river from here. Then we noticed a coyote sitting quietly behind the long grass. When darkness came, he would make his move.
