Ploceus pelzelni
The Slender-billed Weaver is a small weaver, less than 10cm in length and predominantly yellow. The male has a large black mask, extending from the throat to fore-crown, including the black bill (Photo 1). The female (Ph 2 and 3) is of duller yellow, lacking the mask but having the black bill, while the greenish expends from her coat to the top of the head. The juvenile (photo 4), more or less similar to female, except for pale bill.
Observed here should be the subspecies P. p. monacha, occurring in coastal lagoons, mangrove and wetlands areas of W Africa, and around the river Congo in DRC. The bill is shorter and less slender than in the nominate subspecies, which is found in Great Lake's central Africa. Here, we've seen it repeatedly in courtyard of my son's school; school itself was on shores on river Congo.
