Selasphorus rufus
Small Hummingbird that is a mix of bright rufous and green colorations. Rufous hummingbirds are a western species that make it to the Central US occasionally during winter. Only species similar in appearance to the adult is Allen's Hummingbird which has a distinct set of tail feathers when compared to the Rufous.

Thanks Carol!
Great job! Awesome!
Thanks Mayra, Yuko, and Ashley! @Ashley, Arizona is a must for you in August - Snakes, Gila, Amphibs, and loads of hummers!
So, so beautiful!!
What a superb series! I LOVE this so much!
I am so jealous of all your hummingbird pictures, they are all so pretty! I need to find more, my one species isn't cutting it for me!
James, try and get involved with your local banders. They usually love having people watch and see the birds they catch. It helps educate the community while collecting important data regarding migration of certain species. I know the banders here love to get the public involved.
We have had them here in eastern Pa. into November, possibly later in 2012...they have been banding them. I have not seen one, ever. I guess your photos will have to do for now.
great photos
Congrats Maria! I have had one in my yard and it was definitely a treat! I have some friends 30 minutes from me that get them and other great stuff annually, so I run over there during peaks and get what I need - still missing Allen's and Very unfortunately Costa's which was missed simply because I could not confirm the ID on a female between the Costa's and Calliope! Drats!! And thanks Asergio!
Beautiful photos, Cody.
Wonderful! Had one of these at my feeder for the first time this winter; beautiful little birds!

Thanks Guys! I am glad you enjoyed this series :-) Rufous Hummingbirds are one of my favorites during migration that we can potentially get where I am.
