Rufous Hummingbird

Selasphorus rufus

Description:

Small Hummingbird that is a mix of bright rufous and green colorations. Rufous hummingbirds are a western species that make it to the Central US occasionally during winter. Only species similar in appearance to the adult is Allen's Hummingbird which has a distinct set of tail feathers when compared to the Rufous.

James, try and get involved with your local banders. They usually love having people watch and see the birds they catch. It helps educate the community while collecting important data regarding migration of certain species. I know the banders here love to get the public involved.

We have had them here in eastern Pa. into November, possibly later in 2012...they have been banding them. I have not seen one, ever. I guess your photos will have to do for now.

Congrats Maria! I have had one in my yard and it was definitely a treat! I have some friends 30 minutes from me that get them and other great stuff annually, so I run over there during peaks and get what I need - still missing Allen's and Very unfortunately Costa's which was missed simply because I could not confirm the ID on a female between the Costa's and Calliope! Drats!! And thanks Asergio!
