Galapagos Sea Lion

Zalophus wollebaeki

Description:

Curious bunch, they were accustomed to humans so they got real close to people, especially fishermen who gave them fish scraps. On a small rocky island we found a group of around 15-20 individuals were the young ones came to use curious and started to play for at least 2hours with us, the mothers would get in from time to time and the head male would keep an eye out on the young ones. The young would "bite" your arm playfully and you could "bite" them back by pinching them and this would be used in a sort of catch game.

Habitat:

All around the Archipelago, these were either at the ports waiting for fishermen to throw them scraps of fish and in small volcanic islands.

Hahaha no problem, which part of Ecuador? I myself traveled to the archipielago, Quito and the line of the equator. Here they showed us an abundance of hummingbirds, around 15 species or more in the same area.

Thanks Joshua, I know what you mean Karen. When one would pass the port at Santa Cruz to go to the town the sea lions would get close hoping that you would feed them, we didnt interact much with these since they were adults. We chartered a boat to go diving off of some of the rocky islands and during the dives lone foragers would investigate us, these were more reserved than the pups from the small colony that we meet since they too were adults, some would show us their canines if they felt we were to close hahaha.

Great capture Brian! I was in the Galapagos last month & had some amazing encounters with the sea lions too. The parks service advise keeping a distance of 5 - 6', but it isn't easy with these guys who regularly came right up close to investigate us, on land & in the ocean!

Thanks, they were so accustomed to humans that I could take pictures at close range. The group encounter was the first time I meet them in the wild. At first everyone was tense because the beach master swam with us for 10min but once he saw we meant no harm he returned to the beach and then the young pups came to play, a mother would occasionally join us from time to time.
