American Kestrel

Falco sparverius

Description:

A very curious Kestrel that wanted to see what I was doing as much as I wanted to watch him. Perched atop trees, wires and fences diving into grasslands area for grasshoppers and bugs.

Habitat:

American Kestrels occupy habitats ranging from deserts and grasslands to alpine meadows. You’re most likely to see them perching on telephone wires along roadsides, in open country with short vegetation and few trees.

Notes:

The few I've observed were very active, swooping on grasshoppers, watching the ground from above, and mostly solitary. I began to recognize them from afar on the power lines here in Texas. Usually alone or no other birds around. Now one of my favorites with their bold plumage.

Beautiful series, Phil! Your 2nd shot is fantastic! Welcome to PN! I'd love you to add this spotting (and your other raptor spottings) to the mission Raptors of North America: http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/8627...
