nycticorax nycticorax
These birds were spotted at Montevideo´s zoo and they were flying and moving freely along the place probably feeding around as I had never seen them around other places of the city.
Scattered around América, from México to Argentina.
Thank you Debbie, yes, it is a juvenile black crowned night heron (nycticorax nycticorax) we have them here and it has all the features. Thank you both Debbie and Fyn ! =)
Oops, sorry, I forgot about range... This is indeed a Black-crowned Night Heron juvenile... sorry for the confusion.
Patty this is a black crowned night heron juvenile sitting in the shade so the colours of mine may vary slightly although yours does have the orange eye and dark crown. maybe it helps?

Also, if you check the map in the wiki, Uruguay is one of the countries where it is settled...http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Botaurus_pinnatus
I don´t know Fyn, are you sure about the "Nyctanassa violacea"?
Are you sure Fyn because we don´t seem to have the yellow-crowned night heron over here, it belongs to north - east southamerica and we do have the pinnated bittern which seems very similar to the one in the picture....
