Small butterfly (15-18 mm) which is dimorphous sexual. The male upperside is pearly blue with dark grey borders and a grey point to the subsequent submarginal line. The female is brown, adorned with a row of points on a circle of orange in the back submarginal area. Both have wings fringed with a white stripe interspersed thin black lines forming a white checkerboard. The caterpillars have a dorsal gland which secretes a sugary substance of high energy content. Ants are very fond of it. When they find a caterpillar, move it to the nest, where they take care of it during the winter until Chrysalis in the months of May and June.
