Ruffed Grouse (chick)

Bonasa umbellus

Description:

My dog and I came across a brood of Ruffed Grouse with her chicks. She played that she was hurt by making a sound of a whining puppy to distract us from her chicks that flew into the trees to hide. This one flew into a tree right beside us and did not move. Notice the little feathers on top of its head. So happy to see it. We left and all was well with the mom.

Habitat:

Forest.

Your spotting has been nominated for the Spotting of the Week. The winner will be chosen by the Project Noah Rangers based on a combination of factors including: uniqueness of the shot, status of the organism (for example, rare or endangered), quality of the information provided in the habitat and description sections. There is a subjective element, of course; the spotting with the highest number of Ranger votes is chosen. Congratulations on being nominated!

I was quite pleased with myself. But it was pure luck that I saw it land on the branch.
