Melanerpes formicivorus
Red cap from above the eyes to back neck. Black above and below black bill. Black mask that wraps around the yellow eyes and follows the red cap to back. Black back and tail. Black chest that blends into the white belly and Spotted this and it's friends flying back and forth from one tree to this dead tree where they were filling the previous holes with acorns.
Forests and open areas that have Oak trees.
Spotted these in a dead oak tree at a park, that runs along a creek . Can't be certain but it looked like they were actually moving the acorns from one tree to this tree.

Amazing male!!!
Thanks Jellis, I will try and see what the issue is !
It's a issue I have had lately. If you notice how many missions are listed. The site won't let you have more then 5. When I try to delete them on one of the computers I use, it keeps adding them instead and not the ones I want. Meant to fix it this morning on my home computer but I got tied up. Will fix it when I get home.
Hi Jellis, This is an awesome spot, I just recently spotted one of these beauties myself....I see that you have put this bird spotting and a few more birds and reptiles in your mission California Native Mammals and they do not meet the mission criteria, please remove them from that mission and keep on spotting on :)
Thank you Hema and annorion. I spotted these yesterday but the pictures were not good. So when I was in the area again today I leaned against a tree and took pictures and watched about 6 of the Acorn Woodpeckers putting the acorns in the existing holes (old holes). They were flying back and forth from another location. This tree is dead. And I watched also as some Crows were eyeing the stored acorns but never tried to get them.
Lovely series!!
Great series! Looks like they've been busy storing for the winter!
