Royal Walnut Moth

Citheronia regalis

Description:

The moth had a very fuzzy head and body. The wings were a brownish/grey with orange stripes and pale, yellow spots. This moth is in the family Saturnidae, and the caterpillar form is called a Hickory Horned Devil.

Habitat:

Their ideal habitat is deciduous woods.

Notes:

I found this moth next to a gas pump at a rather busy gas station. The are apparently fond of bright lights, and I assume that is what drew it to this location. Worried that it wasn't the safest place for her, I very carefully moved her to a cardboard box and relocated her to a safer location. The males of this species apparently have fuzzy antenna, and this one did not, so I assume it was a female.
