Fruit Fly

Euaresta bella

Description:

Distinctive little Fruit Fly of about 5 mm in length. The females have long black ovipositors. The third picture is of the male. Family Tephritidae. This looks very much like Euaresta bella, which has a distribution from Canada to Mexico and the Bahamas. It feeds on species of the Ragweed Family.

Habitat:

Several, both males and females came to an ultraviolet light in the garden, San Cristobal de Las Casas, 2,200 meters.
