Red fungus

Trametes sanguinea

Description:

This tropical fungus is usually red to orange, as pictured. These colors are uncommon among polypores. The thinness of the bracket and the seared appearance distinguish it from T. sanguinea/Pycnoporus cinnabarinus, a look alike fungus of the same genus, which occurs in cooler regions. Furthermore, only T. sanguinea exhibits highly pigmented, darker shades of red with regard to cap color.

Habitat:

This was spotted on a fallen tree in a rainforest in Akaka Falls State Park during heavy rain. It is a white rot saprobic fungus mainly found in tropical and subtropical regions of the world.

Notes:

It’s also a known plant pathogen. Here’s another reference: https://mushroomobserver.org/name/show_n...

CorduneanuVlad, I'm revising this ID. I no longer think it's Pycnoporus cinnabarinus, but it is a member of the same genus, P. sanguineus.

Thanks for the ID, CorduneanuVlad! This is the 2nd time I've spotted this fungus.
