Broad-banded water snake

Nerodia fasciata confluens

Description:

I've done a lot of web research to come up the name of this snake. Please correct me if I'm wrong. The broad-banded Water Snake is nonvenomous and can grow to an average length of 30 inches (76cm). It is sometimes mistaken for the cottonmouth. The snake in this picture appears to be an immature. The color is a deep brown with reddish-brown crossbands. They eat small fish, frogs, salamanders and crayfish. Feed every few days as they don't eat much at once and are very active. The broad-banded water snake is the only species of banded water snake found in Louisiana.

Habitat:

This broad-banded water snake was spotted in the cyprus swamp at Palmetto Island State Park in Abbeville, Louisiana. It was quickly moving through the swamp so did not get the greatest picture.
