Black-tailed Prairie Dog

Cynomys ludovicianus

Description:

large rodents that look similar to the ground squirrel. Their tunnels are more vertical at the entrance unlike other rodents that go at an angle. The tunnel system can go from 15 to 30 ft below the surface. Making it difficult for predators reach them

Habitat:

Most flat open fields of central states.

Notes:

Prairie dogs look cute but in many of the flat lands they are a problem. With the number of deep tunnels, they are a hazard to larger mammals like horses, cattle, antelope, buffalo and deer. Ranchers and farmers are resorting to shooting them, poison, and drowning them. At the Rocky Mountain Arsenal NWR they have been re-introducing the Black-footed ferrets, one of their predators. They are hoping not eradicate but to reduce the populations down.

Not really. As I mentioned the dogs tunnels run deeper not near the surface like ground squirrels.

Similar to ground squirrels who have dug so many underground tunnels out here.
