Leaf Katydid

Typophyllum sp.

Description:

A beautiful example of mimicry! Notice how even this katydid's body resembles a broken twig. The mimicing of veins on the wing covers is extraordinary. We can tell it is a female because of the pointed ovipositor extending from her abdomen. Please zoom in for a closer look.

Habitat:

Lowland Amazon rainforest

Notes:

Found on a night hike at Napo Lodge.

Fantastic mimic! It looks more like a leaf than a leaf does.

I cannot believe that this is alive. How could this little thing mimic so well.
Maybe much smarter than us.... Great spotting. Thank you very much for sharing this.

My iPad is almost out of power and it is late for me, so check the genus, looks like Typophyllum bolivari, female. But there is not much info. Good luck and night!
