Tabebuia impetiginosa (Handroanthus impetiginosus)
The Tabebuia Tree flowers in Southern Mexico in early spring. At full bloom, the trees are leafless and covered in dark pink flowers. As leaves begin to return, the flowers start falling and cover the ground in a pink carpet. It is truly an impressive sight. We stopped to photograph several trees. Newly blooming flowers have bright yellow throats. This lightens to pink then to a pale pink as the flower ages. The leaves of one tree were serrated (Picture 2) whereas in others, the leaves were not serrated. This tree is native to the Americas, from Mexico through South America and has been introduced as an ornamental in other tropical countries. The bark of this tree has been used medicinally by native americans for hundreds of years (see one of the references). Seeds are produced in pods and are wind-borne. In this part of Mexico, the tree was called "Primavera". Family Bignoniaceae.
