Beaver

Castor canadensis

Description:

A brown, large, semi-aquatic mammal. It has a scaly tail, and its back feet are webbed. They are good divers, and have strong front teeth -- all the better for chewing down trees, both for food and shelter.

Habitat:

There are two species of beaver -- one lives in North America, and the other in Eurasia (this guy being the former). They are found near rivers & lakes -- and this one was spotted on Humber River in Toronto.

Notes:

Beavers are generally nocturnal -- so it's easier to spot 'signs' of them, like their dams or trees that have been chewed at from the bottom.

hmm... it was actually just some dry grass and sticks, and lots of snow.. i don't think it was a dam to be honest. but thank you for the suggestion ava!

If that's it's dam behind it, please consider adding this spotting to the Animal Architecture mission at http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/8082...

thank you tom! it was poking around in the bushes and dropped a whole bunch of snow on itself -- and then shook it off, similar to a dog, as can be seen in the next photo.. ))
