A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Lampyridae
Bioluminescent insect common in eastern North America. Dozens of species are present and they all have unique flash patterns to insure that they attract the right species. A staple of warm summer nights. I have many fawned memories of catching them and putting them in a jar so I can watch them glow close-up. I've been trying to get the first shot for nearly 3 years and was excited to finally get it.
Common in woodlands, backyards and forest edges in early to mid summer. There seemed to be an early brood in early May which preferred grasslands and prairies.
Help narrowing down the scientific name would be appreciated.
