Eastern PaintedTurtle

Chrysemys picta

Description:

A smooth shelled turtle with red on the sides of the shell, yellow stripes on head and neck, and long toenails. I crept up as slow as I could, but it slid off of the stump for cover.

Habitat:

Marshland, low logs, rocks near water so they can bask in the sun to remove parasites and for a quick getaway from predators.

Notes:

Spotted at Piedmont NWR near Macon, GA.
