Carpenter ant

Camponotus semitestaceus

Description:

Large black and red ants that were 5/8 inch or about 15 mm long each. One had an antennae of the other in its mandible. Neither were moving very much but there is a huge nest of them nearby in an underground utility box.

Habitat:

Front yard driveway in Oak woodland.

Notes:

Spotted by one of my teen nature enthusiasts :)
