As Ashley has noted this is not a garter snake, but a brown snake.

Not a garter snake. Note the tan patches on the back side of the head, and the lack of a dorsal or lateral stripe. This is a very gravid brown snake.

It is beautiful, Charlotte Fletcher. I always thought Garter Snakes look harmless, but that one does not... : o
