Cellar spider

Pholcus phalangiodes

Description:

Gravid cellar spider with prey. In the first photo, where my flash went off by mistake, you can see her ovaries with the developing eggs :) The Silver Y caterpillar fell off my basil last night and was completely unresponsive, either dead or dying. After trying and failing to get the spider's attention, I placed it on the floor below her web. When I checked on her today, she had brought the caterpillar into her web, wrapped it in silk, and was feeding on it.

Habitat:

Urban dwelling
