Yellowjacket hover fly

Milesia virginiensis

Description:

Bee/hornet mimic fly. Besides looking like a stinging insect, they are good at bluffing. They buzz loudly and will boldly fly at potential threats, including people. The hind legs are held such that they appear to be a stinger. The adults eat flower nectar; this one is feeding on a silverleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea radiata).
