Flower-Crab Spider

Thomisidae

Description:

Very small (~ 1/4 inch between outstretched front leg pincers) spider, spotted in our front-yard garden.

Habitat:

I have seen these on flowers in urban areas, as well as in the Mojave Desert in all terrains.

Notes:

According to resources I have checked...these guys can change color to mimic the flower upon which they reside, and ambush prey. The photo above shows the 4-eye arrangement common to most spiders I have observed. If provoked, it widens its front legs, moving sideways, waving its 'pincers', similar to a marine crab.
