Aglaiocercus kingii (male)
Striking hummingbird of about 8cm body length, and a tail twice that long. Iridescent colouration in hues of green and blue. Only the male has this exceptionally long tail, which actually hinders its flight, but comes into play during courtship when females pick the males with the longest tail feathers.
Cloud forest in the Cocora Valley, in the Colombian Andes.

Congratulations Felix!
Congratulations Felix, this beauty is our Spotting of the Day:
"You might see the flower first, but this spotting is about the bird! This remarkable male Long-tailed Sylph (Aglaiocercus kingii) is our Spotting of the Day. The long-tailed sylph is a hummingbird in the family Trochilidae. Only the male carries exceptionally long tail feathers which actually hinders its flight, but which will be favoured by females during courtship. First occurence for this species on Project Noah".
