Like their blue bands, I think their eyes are unique ! I saw one just a few weeks ago, after a whole year. Lovely pics Scott !

Very interesting bee. It looks like a cross between a honeybee and a bumblebee.

Amazing macro...
Interesting the way in the blue-banded bees of Australia and Indonesia the blue colour is not nearly so vivid as the ones I see in my garden in Tamil Nadu, India. This one is also a male, but the blue is electric, almost iridescent!

Thank you very much for the information S Frazier. I learned about cowbird's behavior from KarenL. Still, it is amazing about behavioral differences.

My understanding is that they make solitary nests for reproduction, just not big colonial nests, and interestingly since you mentioned it...like the brown cowbird which is a brood parasite that sneaks its eggs into other species' nests, the blue-banded bee is the victim, the host, of a similar ruse by the neon cuckoo bee! http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/168...

I wonder why they do not make nests like any other bees. I learned that cowbirds don't make their own nests either. It is so interesting.

Beautiful shot!
This is sleeping or resting behavior when they clamp like that. Since they do not have nests this is where and how they sleep.

Wow S.Frazier, fantastic capture, great macro, congrats and thanks for sharing
