Florida Banded Water Snake

Nerodia fasciata pictiventris

Description:

with a friend i think unknowingly, we welcomed the new year yesterday by snaking along the paved roads of Everglades National Park in the early evening hours. we were privileged enough to find 11 different snakes crossing the road, all native, healthy and all we effectively caught and let go safely off of the road. unfortunately we saw close to two dozen different snakes dead as road kill and was really saddening. not to mention a baby box turtle and a uncalculable amount of leopard frogs and toads. :( the only red rat snake we saw last was dead, beautiful reds and oranges, at least 2.5 ft long. absurd that there is any roadkill within a park that is suppose to be Their protected area. the ride to Flamingo is far, and boaters and tourists are entitled, but the Park´s management needs fill that road with speed bumps, rumble strips or elevate the whole thing like they are doing tamiami trail. something to keep these sick drivers away from our family out there in their home. any ideas folks? culebra ♥

Habitat:

Crossing the Main Road of Everglades National Park, South Florida Peninsula

Notes:

Happy Year of the Snake!!

hey janson. we were also totally thrown off by the coloration. we knew it was a water snake but had not idea what sub species or if a different a color variation. we were kind of near an area where there was salt water intrusion so it could possibly be a mix. we are all open to other suggestions of what it could be. thanks for the support and interest.
