Javan-Hawk Eagle

Nisaetus bartelsi

Description:

Javan Hawk Eagles have a dark brown back and chestnut coloring along the sides of the head and the nape; the throat is cream-colored with a dark stripe. The crest is held almost vertically and is black tipped with white. The wings are dark brown, while the long tail is gray-brown with four black bands, the subterminal band being the widest. Underparts are white with rufous barring. The eyes and feet are yellow, and the cere is gray.

Habitat:

It frequents primary humid forest, although individuals and even nests have been recorded in secondary forest, production forest and tropical semi-deciduous forest, preferring rugged slopes with high vegetation cover (Syartinilia and Tsuyuki 2008). While it occurs from sea-level to high mountains, it is most frequent at 500-1,000 m.

Notes:

This species is endemic to Java island, Indonesia. Have a bad history about the population. Since 1994-2008, the status is endangered, maybe up to now.
