A big and nice one ! Common here, found in the grass. The bite hurts, but the poison is not danger. Eats cockroaches (look here: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/741... )

Them! was a great movie! as were some other bug movies of the 50s...including the lesser known yet still formulaic The Monster that Challenged the World lol (about a beetle). others were about a praying mantic, and one was about a grasshopper I think (End of the World set in Chicago and with Peter Graves I think.)
