Monarch butterfly

Danaus plexippus

Description:

I'm always happy to see a monarch butterfly each year. They only live 6 to 8 months. They like milkweed and this monarch was spotted among the thistle in an open field. There was only this one monarch spotted at this location. Their coloring is orange, black, and white wings. This coloring actually sends a warning to predators that the monarch is foul tasting and poisonous.

Habitat:

Found throughout the United States, as well as Mexico and Canada. This monarch was spotted in a thistle field in Rock Island, Illinois.

Notes:

I have provided a reference to the migration pattern of the monarch! It is very interesting!
