A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Polistes olivaceus
This wasp is all to common in Mauritius and like all its relatives it can deliver several nasty stings at once. Only when i had downloaded the picture off my camera did i notice an egg deposited in the top brood cells of the nest. This is most likely a new Queen or Foundress preparing a new nest. Throughout the incubation the foundress, and eventually workers, bring the developing larvae soft caterpillars on which to feed.
Throughout the Tropical Pacific to Japan and into the Asian continent.
