Eastern Spadefoot Toad

Scaphiopus holbrooki

Description:

When I first saw one of these outside my house, I could not believe my eyes. I had seen this species before, though never this yellow. The last photo shows two Spadefoots that are drastically different in coloration. According to my source, the "hourglass" lines on their back are usually more yellow in males.

Habitat:

Suburban neighborhood next to mixed forest, which includes cypress swamp

Notes:

After weeks of rain, the frogs and toad populations exploded in my neighborhood. At night you could hear the whole forest singing. I went outside one night and saw many toads around my carport and hopping around on the road
