Emerald Cockroach Wasp

Ampulex compressa

Description:

A solitary wasp of the Ampulicidae family. Metallic bluish green in color with some bright red colors on the legs. It's wings, curved antennae and long mandibles are black on color. Commonly seen wandering alone but fly in pairs occasionally when looking for holes for their larva. Picture 3: A wasp looking for suitable holes, once it found a suitable one, it will clean the hole (take everything out) and drag a paralyzed cockroach (with egg inside it) into the hole.

Habitat:

Often fly around my backyard looking for cockroaches and holes for their young.
