Nelumbo lutea
Very large flower around 8 inches across, very showy. Plant grows in water with blossoms about a foot above water. Leaves very large flat pannicles floating on water surface. Water beads and rolls off. Seed case about 3 inches across. When seeds mature the seed case is honeycombed with holes. Blossoms close up at night.
Found in abundant numbers in Rend Lake in sheltered coves around the bird sanctuary area.

They are 6-8 inches across and most stick up above the water about a foot.

My husband and I paddled our canoe across Rend Lake to the bird sanctuary and found tons of these beauties in a sheltered cove there.
