Variegated Fritillary (Chrysalis)

Description:

The Chrysalis is light green with black splotches and spots and gold tubercles (spikes). The caterpillar was red black and white with spines and the butterfly is orange with black/brown spots.

Habitat:

The butterfly is found in open habitats like alfalfa and clover fields, pastures, roadsides, and mountain meadows. The caterpillar had climbed my doorjamb and attached itself to the eaves above the door.
