Ardea herodias
A large heron. The head, chest, and wing plumes give it a shaggy appearance. They appear blue-gray from a distance. They have long legs, a thick, daggerlike bill and black stripe over their eye.
I observed these trees with empty nests shortly after we moved here. They are near a major road and in a greenbelt park with paths. Today the herons are occupying several of them and this pair are repairing one of the nests.
It is overcast and rainy today, but will come back when the sun is out.
