The picture was the back of the butterfly. I also thought it was a moth until it showed the front part of itself. Sadly, I was not able to get a good picture of the front.
This is a beautiful moth, probably one of the Underwings from genus Catocala. Without a dorsal view (the back) of the moth, I do not think there is a good chance of getting a better ID. http://bugguide.net/node/view/368
